Welcome to COPE. Let’s get started by defining what is meant by cope. COPE is to deal with and attempt to overcome problems and difficulties. Things that are considered difficult or problematic can occur daily and be a great source of stress. How well we do or do not COPE with these difficulties can determine our level of sadness, depression and anxiety. It can greatly influence our sense of wellbeing.
It is quite normal, with all the noise of society today, to feel overwhelmed when problems, difficulties, even grief and loss show up. Without a clear strategy, plan or adequate support, one can become stuck and feel incapable of moving forward with life. One key thing to consider when establishing your coping style is to first examine your perspective. Is this problem or difficulty as monumental as it appears? Is it unsolvable? Ask yourself, how can I move forward with life in the face of this loss and grief that I feel.
To assist with landing in a positive place, first, give yourself grace. Allow yourself the opportunity to feel what is normal emotion to you. Don’t hold it in thinking you have to be strong. It is normal to be concerned, frustrated or anxious when your car needs repair, or a friend is dealing with a life-altering disease, or a loved one passes away. There is no set way to COPE. However, there are methods and tools to help us COPE to our best ability and be able to not only Make it through each day but truly THRIVE.
Start by taking a step back, taking a deep breath, and set aside 10, 20, 30 minutes daily just for you. This could be the beginning of a great new fulfilling direction. Take it one moment, one thought, one action and one day at a time.
